LEADER-IN-TRAINING (LIT) PROGRAM

The Leader-In-Training program is designed to give young people (age 13 and up) experience working with children and training in leadership skills.

LIT EXPECTATIONS AND DUTIES

An LIT will be expected to participate and help in all of the activities that their group undertakes.  A Riding Camp LIT will assist with leading or sidewalking in a minimum of one riding lesson per day (training is provided). Please note that potential LITs must:

  • Enjoy and be comfortable working with children of all ages
  • Be interested in furthering their leadership skills
  • Be able to communicate openly with children, peers and supervisors
  • Be appropriate role models for younger children
  • Behave in a mature manner at all times at camp

 PRE-CAMP TRAINING

LITs participate in one day of orientation and training prior to camp, led by the Camp Director:

  • Introduction & Expectations

  • Leadership Skills

  • Teaching Skills

  • Child Development/Behaviour

  • Job Skills

  • Safety on the Farm

  • Grooming and Tacking Horses

  • Leading, Sidewalking, Mounting and Dismounting

CAMP EXPERIENCE

During the camp session, each LIT will be assigned to shadow an experienced camp counselor who will help them learn leadership skills.  LITs will receive continued "on the job" training in the above topics, and first-hand experience as they assist the group of campers to which they have been assigned.

Each LIT will have at least two opportunities to develop independent leadership skills by planning, organizing and leading a group activity. The Camp Director and their own group counselor will be resource people if the LIT needs assistance, guidance and feedback to the LIT following the activity.

Upon completion of the two-week session each LIT will receive a written evaluation and a certificate that can be used as part of their portfolio for future employment.

If you are interested in becoming a Leader-In-Training at Camp Sunrise, please complete an LIT Application Form and submit with your resume .    Completed forms can be mailed, emailed, faxed or dropped off to Sunrise.  We will then set up an interview time.  Interviews will be in groups of 3 or 4 applicants.

Upon successful completion of the interview, LITs will be given a Registration Form to complete, which will provide Sunrise with further medical and emergency details.   The Registration form must be submitted with the $50.00* registration fee.  This fee includes:

  • Two Camp Sunrise T-shirts (please specify size)

  • LIT Training Manual

  • Regular LIT training sessions and individualized feedback, throughout camp session

At the present time we are planning transportation from Guelph for the month of August.  This could change depending on the demand.  We do encourage LITs to carpool.

ABOUT THE LIT INTERVIEW

Many LITs have not had the opportunity to experience a formal interview before.  This process gives us the opportunity to meet each other, and the applicant the chance to develop interview skills in a comfortable setting.

When preparing for the interview the applicant should remember to:

  • Wear close-toed shoes (no sandals) -we may be going to the barn
  • Think about his/her interests and related experience (completing the Application Form will help to ‘brainstorm’ ideas)
  • Be prepared to answer questions about skills and goals
  • Think of examples that have shown initiative, teamwork or leadership

The interview helps the Camp Director to evaluate whether each candidate is prepared to meet the LIT expectations (see above).   Getting to know the interests and skills of each potential LIT also enables the Camp Director to match each LIT with a counselor and camper group with whom they will enjoy working.

We look forward to meeting you!
