  • Frequently Asked Questions

How much do riding lessons cost?
Both Riding Club and Therapeutic Lessons at Sunrise cost $35 for a one hour group lesson or a half hour semi-private/private lesson.

What is required to sign up my child with special needs?
Individuals with disabilities must complete a Rider package, which contains a General Information Form, a Medical Referral, a Release and Indemnity, a Photo Release, and a Degree of Bodily Contact Form.  To receive a package containing these forms, please call or email the Sunrise office.  Contact info is listed at the bottom of this page.

Can individuals without special needs participate in lessons at Sunrise?
Yes, we have "Riding Club" for those 8 years and up, beginner to advanced.  This is an integrated program - participants must be able to ride independently (without volunteer assistance), and some riders with special needs join "Riding Club" once they have achieved this goal.

    Can adults ride?
Certainly, we have many adult riders with and without special needs.

    Do you have Riding Camp?
Yes, during July and August Sunrise offers an integrated summer day camp with riding lessons as one of the activities over a two week session. For more information on our various camp programs, CLICK HERE.

    Are Sunrise staff qualified?
Sunrise is a medically supervised program. We have a consultant Family Physician, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and Educational Professionals.
Riding Instructors at Sunrise are certified with the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association and with Equine Canada.
Staff and Instructors attend clinics, workshops and seminars frequently to remain current in their field of expertise.
All staff have current First-aid and CPR.
Safety of Riders, Volunteers and Horses is of utmost concern at Sunrise. Riders must wear ASTM approved helmets and proper footwear.

    What is CanTRA?
The Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA) is the only governing body of therapeutic riding in Canada. CanTRA member centres are inspected regularly to ensure a high level of safety standards. CanTRA member centres purchase liability insurance through CanTRA to provide adequate coverage and ensure national standards of safety. Sunrise must pay a head fee per rider to cover the cost of the insurance. CanTRA offers a national certification program for therapeutic riding instructors as follows:

  • Canadian Therapeutic Riding Assistant Instructor (CTRAI)
  • Canadian Therapeutic Riding Intermediate Instructor (CTRII)
  • Canadian Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI)
  • Canadian Therapeutic Riding Coach (CTRC)
For more information about CanTRA please visit them at www.cantra.ca

Why must each rider pay a Sunrise membership fee each year?
By collecting a membership fee, Sunrise is able to designate some of those funds to cover the CanTRA head fee and CanTRA membership fee.

    What if I can't afford $35 a lesson?
Sunrise has a "Scholarship Fund" for riders with disabilities. You may apply to receive a scholarship from the fund to reduce the cost of the lessons. Please contact the Sunrise office to receive more information on this fund or to receive a "Scholarship Fund" application.
